If you've had $10,000 or more in a foreign bank account at any time during the calendar year, you need to file and FBAR with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). This only applies if you're a U.S. person, meaning resident, citizen, or business entity.
Expats get an automatic two-month extension to file their tax return (until June 15), but any taxes owed are still due by April 15 to avoid interest charges. You can also request an additional extension until October 15 if needed.
Depending on your residency or length of stay, you may qualify for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion which could deduct up to $126,500 (in 2023). If you qualify for FEIE, you may also be able to deduct certain housing expenses such as rent, utilities, and other costs. If you pay taxes to a foreign country, you might be able to claim a credit or deduction for those taxes on your U.S. return.
These are just a few of the deductions Keeper will help you claim to make sure you pay the leas taxes possible.
