Question
My dogs are my emotional support animals, so am I able to write off all their expenses as well since they help me with my day to day sanity and support as a independent contractor?
AI accountant’s answer:
While your dogs provide valuable emotional support, the IRS generally doesn't consider pet expenses as a deductible medical expense. The only exception is if your pet is a certified service animal, specifically trained to assist with a diagnosed disability. Emotional support animals, while important, don't typically meet this criteria. So, unfortunately, you likely won't be able to write off your dogs' expenses on your taxes.
